MEPI is a part of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs within the U.S. Department of State. With 35 full-time staff and contractors in Washington, D.C.,  and Coordinators, Administrators, and Foreign Service Officers serving in the MENA region, MEPI is able to rapidly respond to emerging needs as they arise.

Through its two Regional Offices in Tunis and Abu Dhabi, MEPI directly reaches civil society actors on the ground.

Every U.S. embassy in the region has a MEPI Committee dedicated to channeling potential participants, project ideas and prospective implementers to the Regional Office and to MEPI in Washington, D.C.

Every embassy also has dedicated MEPI Coordinators and/or Administrators to oversee MEPI’s in-country activities.  MEPI coordinates with other State Department offices so that projects are timely and further U.S. strategy and policies.
